Did you ever feel nervous on stage?

We were lucky, we didn’t suffer from stage fright. We played at the White House, for the then president, Richard Nixon, just as the Watergate affair was unravelling. But President Nixon was very pleasant to us. And when Karen passed away, there were people who didn’t show up at her funeral, who I felt really should have and yet we received a long, hand-written note from Richard Nixon saying how sorry he was.

Who did you get your musical talent from?

We take after both of our parents. My mother had a nice, warm voice, but she froze in front of a professional microphone. One time, I wanted to record her voice for posterity in the studio, but I couldn’t, because she had stage fright! But Karen, on the other hand, felt immediately comfortable in front of an audience. You need that kind of confidence.
